FAQ
What is SMW Match Play?
SMW Match Play lets you race Super Mario World levels with friends online.
It gives the race some structure and keeps everyone in sync.
Players start each level together, and Match Play scores their results using the rules you choose.
Which emulators can I use?
- BizHawk 2.11.1 (recommended)
- bsnes-plus v05.0-nwa3
- SNES9x 1.63-nwa
Use the exact builds linked by the launcher. Emulator setup
Can hardware and emulator players play together?
Yes. SD2SNES players and players using any supported emulator can share the same room.
What does the connector do?
It lets your game know which level to play, receives your opponents’ results and shares your results with them.
Can I do anything offline?
Yep, but honestly, this is mainly intended as a multiplayer experience.
One-player challenges give you something to play on your own against CPUs. No connector is needed.
You can also try experimental Web Match with a console that isn’t connected to a PC. You’ll still need the website for rooms, setup codes and results.
What types of match are there?
Start your match with one of five editable templates: One Attempt, Time Attack, Best Two of Three Vote, Two-Try Draft and Elimination. You can mix and match different rules to race however you like.
What do I need?
You need a Windows PC and your own copy of SMW Practice Cart V3.-.9 from IsoFrieze’s Practice Cart page. Use the V3.-.9 prerelease rather than V2.5.0. Setup verifies its checksum and keeps the original Practice Cart ROM intact.
Then choose one setup: use the emulator package, or use an NTSC Super Nintendo with an SD2SNES / FXPak, an SD card and a USB data cable connected to your PC.
So is this a Super Mario World hack or not?
Yes… Well, listen. It’s simples.
The SMW Practice Cart is a ROM hack of Super Mario World, and SMW Match Play is a ROM hack of the SMW Practice Cart.
So SMW Match Play is a ROM hack of a ROM hack of Super Mario World…
So, by the power of transitivity, yes, it’s a ROM hack of Super Mario World.
But can’t I just build this from my SMW (USA) ROM?
Sorry, no. But you can get your own BPS patch from IsoFrieze’s Practice Cart page to patch your SMW (USA) ROM into version 3.9 of the Practice Cart.
Can I apply the patch myself?
Yes. The patch-only package lets you apply the patch manually. It does not include the connector used for online play.

The connector checks for published updates.
Choose Install update… when it appears and provide your copy of SMW Practice Cart V3.-.9.smc.
Setup verifies its checksum and keeps the original Practice Cart ROM intact.
The connector installs the update and restarts.
Your PC records and connector settings are kept.
Flash cart players also need to copy the generated Match Play ROM to their SD card.
The game and connector must match the room server’s version.
How can I get help or report a problem?
What’s Mario looking at in the background?
I like to think that, after all his hard work, he’s finally resting and watching the sun rise on a grateful Mushroom Kingdom…
Or maybe he’s in a stupor, haunted by the existential dread of never-ending races to come.
